Buffalo, sable & Nyala with Mokore safaris

Earlier this year, This Is Africa had the privilege of organising a hunt for one of our favourite clients, Mark, on an unforgettable adventure with Mokore Safaris in Mozambique. Mark had his sights set on two iconic species: sable and nyala. Of course, as tradition goes, a Cape buffalo quickly found its way onto the list too. And for this unique combination, there was no better destination than Mokore’s wild and remote concession.

The plains game numbers here are off the charts, but what really sets this area apart is its buffalo hunting. After two grueling days of tracking through mopane thickets and dusty riverbeds, Mark finally got his chance.

In a heart-pounding moment, the bull broke cover, and Mark pulled off a running shot—a risky move, but under the circumstances, it was the right one. The result was a magnificent old dagga boy, the kind of buffalo every hunter dreams about.

With buffalo in the salt, attention shifted back to the original quest. Sable were everywhere, and it didn’t take long before Mark was standing behind the sweeping horns of a truly majestic bull. Not far from there, luck struck again. While glassing for plains game, we crossed paths with an exceptional warthog boar—one that will soon make its way to the USA as another trophy from Africa’s wild places. And as if the hunting gods weren’t already generous enough, Mark also added a pair of the Tiny Ten: an oribi and a grey duiker.

The nyala hunt proved more challenging. Days were spent combing thick bush and riverine forest, chasing ghostlike shapes that seemed to melt into the shadows.

Finally, patience and persistence paid off. The spiral horns of a beautiful nyala bull emerged from the brush, and Mark closed the chapter on another dream species.

Life in camp was just as memorable as the hunting. Mokore’s concession is a true wilderness—untamed, untouched, and rich with wildlife. Guided by owner and professional hunter Neil Duckworth, Mark had the rare chance to hunt alongside one of Africa’s greats. Evenings by the fire were filled with stories, laughter, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from shared adventure.

It’s worth noting that Mokore Safaris has transformed this once-derelict concession into a thriving wildlife haven. Today, the area is not only home to incredible plains game and buffalo, but also boasts lion and elephant populations that add to its wild spirit—even if they aren’t currently exportable to the USA. For us, this adventure was more than just a hunt; it was a reminder of what Africa is all about—vast skies, wild places, and the thrill of the chase. Keep an eye out for these hunts airing on This Is Africa Season 8, coming January 2026 on the Sportsman Channel and YouTube.
